The Hobbits´ humble Walking Song:
The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say (LOTR, p. 72)
The song see life – the life of the individual, of the community, and of the larger community of communities that is the world – as a Road, that “goes ever on and on”, that has an objective nature and meaning and direction of its own, and presents to us tasks so that “I must follow if I can”, even though we know little and “cannot say” the future. You could call this philosophy The Art of Pilgrimage (read more).
